Quote

Jesus came to raise the dead. He did not come to teach the teachable; He did not come to improve the improvable; He did not come to reform the reformable. None of those things works." --Robert Farrar Capon

Very thought-provoking comment. I wonder, if this is so, why He did so much teaching? Just the first thing that came to my mind . . .

Because (I suspect) we needed to be undeceived from thinking we were ok trundling along as we are. We need to know what God's standards look like so we know we aren't good enough to fix ourselves up with a bit of self-effort, Jesus isn't calling us to reformation, but to transformation -- He in us doing what we could never do for ourselves.

Yes, self-righteousness seems to be too easy a by-product for a lot of people who feel they live by His teachings. Thanks for elaborating!
